The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners proclaimed Oct. 4–10, 2026, National 4-H Week, recognizing the program’s work with local youth and honoring Sue Giles, a longtime 4-H volunteer, who was recently inducted into the Oregon 4-H Hall of Fame.

Sue said she has been involved in 4-H for 55 years. She joined as a 9-year-old and later became a club leader, for the past 43 years. Shelly Spangler, an education program assistant with the local 4-H program, nominated her for the Hall of Fame. “4-H is who I am,” Sue told commissioners, describing the rewards of watching young people grow and hearing from former members about the difference the program made in their lives.

Heather Tower, the program coordinator, and Spangler outlined the range of activities available to young people, from after-school programs and summer camps to STEM projects, dog clubs, archery and shooting sports. They said the program serves youth across the county and is working to reach more in North County.

Tower emphasized that 4-H depends on volunteers to lead clubs and make room for interested young people. They encouraged community members with skills to share to

consider volunteering. The proclamation cited 4-H’s role in developing young people’s confidence and leadership skills. It noted that Oregon 4-H serves more than 20,000 youth each year.
