National Night Out Brings Communities Together

Neighbors, first responders, and community organizations are coming together across Lincoln County tonight (8/4/26) for National Night Out, an annual event designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

National Night Out began in 1984 through the National Association of Town Watch as a way to promote crime prevention, neighborhood involvement, and positive partnerships between residents and public safety agencies.

What started as a simple effort encouraging people to turn on their porch lights and spend the evening outside with neighbors has grown into a nationwide celebration involving thousands of communities across the United States.

Today, National Night Out focuses on building trust between law enforcement, fire departments, emergency responders, and the public while providing families with an opportunity to meet the people who serve their communities in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

Several events are planned throughout Lincoln County this year.

In Lincoln City, the Lincoln City Police Department and Parks & Recreation Department will host National Night Out with Touch-A-Truck from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Lincoln City Community Center, 2150 NE Oar Place. Families can explore emergency vehicles, meet first responders, enjoy games, raffle prizes, community resource booths, and free food. There will also be an event taking place this year in Otis at the fire station.

In Depoe Bay, residents are invited to gather at Depoe Bay City Park from 4 to 6 p.m. for the city's annual National Night Out celebration. The event provides an opportunity to meet Lincoln County Sheriff's Deputies, firefighters, and community partners like Neighbors For Kids, while enjoying family-friendly activities.

The City of Newport is also hosting a National Night Out celebration at the Newport Recreation Center, joining communities across the county in bringing together residents and public safety agencies for an evening focused on neighborhood connections and crime prevention.

Community members will have opportunities to visit with officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and local organizations while learning about services available throughout the area, including the popular school supply giveaway.

The city the Toledo Police Department, Toledo Fire Department, public safety staff, neighborhood groups, and local community organizations. Families will also have the opportunity to see emergency vehicles up close and spend time with the people who help keep Toledo safe.

In Siletz, the community celebration is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. and with members of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and the city to feature approximately 600 free hamburgers and hot dogs, along with activities for children and families, including a bounce house. The Sheriff's Office also will host an event in Waldport at Southworth Park from 6-8pm. The south county event will include food, music, games, and a bounce house.

National Night Out serves as more than just a community gathering. Organizers say the event helps build relationships that can improve public safety by encouraging residents to become familiar with their neighbors, recognize suspicious activity, and work together to create safer communities.

Whether attending a Touch-A-Truck event, enjoying a free meal with neighbors, or simply taking the opportunity to thank first responders for their service, National Night Out continues to be a reminder that strong communities are built through communication, cooperation, and neighborhood pride.
